Near-synonym choice in natural language generation

چکیده
We present Xenon, a natural language generation system capable of distinguishing between nearsynonyms. It integrates a near-synonym choice module with an existing sentence realization module. We evaluate Xenon using English and French nearsynonyms.

Contextual Influences on Near-Synonym Choice
One of the least-understood aspects of lexical choice in Natural Language Generation is choosing between near-synonyms. Previous studies of this issue, such as Edmonds and Hirst [4], have focused on semantic differences between near-synonyms, as analysed by lexicographers. Our empirical analysis of near-synonym choice in weather forecasts, however, suggests that other factors are probably more ...
متن کاملBuilding and Using a Lexical Knowledge Base of Near-Synonym Differences
Choosing the wrong word in a machine translation or natural language generation system can convey unwanted connotations, implications, or attitudes. The choice between near-synonyms such as error, mistake, slip, and blunder — words that share the same core meaning, but differ in their nuances — can be made only if knowledge about their differences is available. We present a method to automatica...
متن کاملA Baseline System for Chinese Near-Synonym Choice
Near-synonym sets represent groups of words with similar meaning, which are useful knowledge resources for many natural language applications such as query expansion for information retrieval (IR) and computer-assisted language learning. However, near-synonyms are not necessarily interchangeable in contexts due to their specific usage and syntactic constraints. Previous studies have developed v...
متن کاملNear-Synonym Choice using a 5-gram Language Model
In this work, an unsupervised statistical method for automatic choice of near-synonyms is presented and compared to the stateof-the-art. We use a 5-gram language model built from the Google Web 1T data set. The proposed method works automatically, does not require any human-annotated knowledge resources (e.g., ontologies) and can be applied to different languages. Our evaluation experiments sho...

This is due to a lack of knowledge about differences b...
